Massachusetts Doling Out Grants to Aid ‘Buy Local’ Effort

BOSTON (AP) — The state is doling out $300,000 in grants to support the efforts of six organizations trying to connect food producers to their local communities.

Gov. Charlie Baker said the goal of the grant program is to help "Buy Local" groups that he said are "committed to the idea that knowing where your food comes from makes both good health and economic sense."

He said the administration is hoping to foster a sustainable local food system while also increasing consumer awareness and demand for locally grown products.

The organizations receiving the grants are located in western, central, northeastern and southeastern Massachusetts.

Among the projects is an effort to strengthen consumer demand for products from farmers and fishermen in Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Nantucket, Norfolk, and Plymouth counties.
