Much of southern New England remains under a tornado watch, but one storm that led to a series of tornado warnings in southeastern Massachusetts weakened and moved offshore.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued at mid-evening Tuesday for a new line of storms moving across western and north central Massachusetts and northern Connecticut with an approaching cold front.

No tornado touchdowns were reported with the earlier storm, and no major damage from thunderstorm winds that toppled trees and power lines In some local areas.

Severe thunderstorms led to about 50,000 power outages in southern Connecticut on Tuesday afternoon but no reports of major damage.

The tornado watch in effect until 11 p.m. includes northern Connecticut, much of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Western parts of Connecticut and Massachusetts are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m.  (Associated Press)
