Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Hosting Annual Pow Wow
The Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Tribe's annual three-day pow wow is getting started.
The 92nd annual cultural tradition runs through Sunday at the Barnstable County Fairgrounds in Falmouth. This year's theme is 'Keepers of the East', to celebrate all Eastern native woodland tribes.
The pow wow is a gathering place for Native Americans to celebrate and honor the sacred relationships between people, nature and the spiritual world, and to share their heritage and traditions. This year's event includes traditional dance and drumming contests, as well as 50 artisans and vendors.
It also features a ceremonial 'Fireball Game', played with a flaming ball that's kicked and carried. It is a medicine game in which participants believe their own pain helps heal the sick and injured. The public is invited.
