U.S. Senator Edward Markey toured Downtown New Bedford Wednesday with Mayor Jon Mitchell and discussed challenges the city is facing.

The Senator said the major talking point was a focus on wind energy and having New Bedford become a major producer of wind power.

Markey tells WBSM News he wants to secure federal funding to help the city produce turbines for wind farms off the coast.

Markey also said he plans to assist the fishing industry by securing aid for disaster releif. Markey said the potential for New Bedford is limitless.

Markey is planning to hold a ceremonial swearing-in ceremony at boston's historic Faneuil Hall.

Markey was actually sworn in last month by Vice President Joe Biden during a brief ceremony in the Senate Chamber in Washington.

Thursday's event is a chance for more of the Democrat's supporters and members of the public to mark the start of his tenure in the Senate.
