A 50-year-old man is in serious condition after being stabbed in the North End.

New Bedford Police Sgt. Victor Mendes tells WBSM News the victim was stabbed at least once in the chest behind Central Plaza at Mount Pleasant and Nauset Streets Monday afternoon.

After being stabbed, the man walked into the Subway sandwich shop in the plaza and called for help. The unidentified man was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.

Police are searching for a suspect in the stabbing, and are combing the railroad tracks and woods near the plaza. The area has been on the radar of police after a large homeless encampment was discovered there last year.

The stabbing is under investigation.
