A man shot by Dartmouth Police during a criminal investigation appeared Friday in New Bedford District Court.

Twenty-three year old Ryan Kuphal of Dartmouth was ordered to pay $5,000 cash bail, and to immediately check himself into an inpatient mental health facility.

Kuphal was shot by Dartmouth Police on Sunday while responding to a domestic incident allegedly involving Kuphal and his mother.

Police say they confronted the suspect on Bush Street and an officer fired his weapon after the suspect charged them with a knife.

Kuphal was treated at Rhode Island Hospital for the gunshot wound. He was released from the hospital this week, waived rendition, and was escorted to District Court Friday by State Troopers.

The officer-involved shooting continues to be investigated.  The officers remain on paid administrative leave.
