A Fall River man was sentenced to 10 to 12 years in state prison on Tuesday following his conviction for a vicious hammer attack.

Gregg Miliote, the Director of Communications for the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, says that 24-year-old Mario Ramos pleaded guilty in Fall River Superior Court to charges of home invasion, strangulation, intimidation of a witness, assault and battery and two counts of aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Miliote says that on July 13, 2015 Ramos's girlfriend reported to Fall River Police that Ramos became enraged because she was speaking to his mother and immediately began strangling her.

The girlfriend tried to call police after Ramos released her but he took her phone.

She eventually fled to a neighbor's house with her two children, ages 3 and 4, and called police there.

While at the neighbor's home she heard a knock at the door and opened it thinking it was the police.

Ramos then burst through the door with a hammer and viciously attacked the male neighbor before chasing his girlfriend into a bedroom and beating her with the hammer on the head, upper body and stomach.

He then fled the scene, but was arrested nearby.

The girlfriend sustained what are described as being "mostly bruising and laceration type injuries."

The neighbor sustained a fractured shoulder and ribs.

After he was released from the hospital his broken rib created a lacerated liver and he was bleeding out internally forcing him to undergo emergency life-saving surgery at Rhode Island Hospital.

Miliote says that in 2011 Ramos was charged in Puerto Rico with attacking his brother with a hammer.

Upon his release from prison Ramos must serve 10 years of supervised probationm the conditions of which include undergoing psychiatric evaluations and treatment, consenting to random substance abuse screenings, and having no contact with the victims.
