A New Bedford man is facing charges after he allegedly swung a machete at another man.

Detective Captain Steven Vicente says that at around 7 p.m. Wednesday officers responded to a fight in progress outside of 450 Union St.

Upon arriving on scene they spoke with the suspect, identified as 51-year-old Christopher Rogers, who said that he and a friend had gotten into a fight after they had been drinking in his second floor apartment.

Officers followed a blood trail for several blocks until they arrived at a home on Liberty St.

They found the victim, identified as a 37-year-old New Bedford man, inside heavily bleeding from a 3 inch laceration to his hand.

The victim confirmed that he and Rogers had been drinking when they got into an argument that escalated into a fight.

He says Rogers then swung a machete at him as he tried to defend himself causing him to suffer the cut to his hand.

The victim was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The machete was also recovered at the scene of the assault.

Neither Rogers or the victim would say what the fight was about.

Rogers was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday morning on one count of Assault and Battery with a dangerous weapon, and Assault with intent to maim.
