A Providence man who was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend's Chihuahua puppy has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Area media report Luis Laboy was sentenced yesterday in Superior Court.

Judge Netti C. Vogel called the killing "acts of a violent man who needs to pay for his crimes."

She accused him of killing the 12-week-old puppy, named Blacky, as an extension of his rage to his former girlfriend.

The 44-year-old Laboy also is barred from having any contact with his ex-girlfriend and is not allowed to own a dog for 15 years.

His girlfriend broke up with Laboy in 2012. He stopped by an apartment they had shared, killed the dog and assaulted her.
