Man Charged in Falmouth Officers’ Shooting Was Wanted in RI

BARNSTABLE — At the time Malik Koval allegedly shot two Falmouth Police officers on July 27, there was a Rhode Island warrant for his arrest.

The warrant for Koval was issued after the 21-year-old failed to appear for an arraignment last December. He had been arrested a month earlier after a police chase in Westerly, Rhode Island. According to the Cape Cod Times, Koval posted the $100 bail but never returned for the court appearance.

The report also says that Westerly police report strange behavior while he was in custody. Officers said that not only did Koval pull his car in front of a Firefighter's vehicle while it had its lights and siren active, he displayed erratic behavior while in his cell. That including stripping naked and telling police that people were coming to kill him.

Koval was arraigned earlier this week from his Boston hospital bed in the shooting of the two Falmouth officers. They were called to his home after he was seen breaking glass in the street.

The two officers said that after they were shot, they returned fire, striking the suspect five times. Koval, and the two officers are recovering from the wounds.
