Some New Bedford students will be spending more time in school beginning this fall.

Supt. Pia Durkin rolled out the plans for longer school days during last night's School Committee meeting. Dr. Durkin says the focus right now is to inform residents about the upcoming changes as soon as possible.

Under the new proposal, New Bedford High School will begin class at 7:20 AM and conclude at 2:30 PM.

Elementary schools will start their day at 8:45 AM and end at 3:00 PM. They will also let students out at 1:30 PM on Fridays rather than the current 1:00 pm.

Keith Middle School may have a 15 minute schedule change, but so far that is undetermined. The other two middle schools will have no changes.

These changes have not been approved by the committee yet, but should be before the end of school this June.
