Pope Francis touched down yesterday at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington for the start of his first trip to the United States. His whirlwind tour includes an address to Congress today, a speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Friday and a weekend visit to Philadelphia for the Festival of Families. When His Holiness gets to Phillie, New Bedford Salvation Army volunteers will be there helping to feed the thousands of police, fire and EMT's.

Major Gil Parkhurst and I spoke about the historic visit and the local connection. Major Parhurst and others from here and through out New England will be lending a hand to keep the security units well hydrated and fed. He didn't think he'd get a chance to actually see the Pope, but just being there is meaningful and a rare event.
