Imagine most Massachusetts government schools beginning the school year after Labor Day weekend. Remember enjoying all of August off from the classroom? It seems like the schools re-opened a few weeks ago. THEY DID!

Jan 4: Christmas break ends

Jan 18: MLK Jr. holiday

Feb. 12: Schools close for Winter break

Makes you wonder what the taxpayers are funding?

Most private Independent schools in the Commonwealth will be open next week. The majority of government schools throughout the country do not give a February vacation. I loved the vacation week as a kid, but what do kids know?

Let's convince school administrators and boards to cancel the February winter vacation, and slide Spring vacation to March. ( Like most states) We'll be able to accomplish two great things:

1) More potential snow days. Snow days are the #1 reason cited to starting school prior to Labor Day. School can't venture into July.

2) If the school calendar has one less vacation week, the school year can start after Labor Day, allowing teachers, families and businesses to enjoy one more week of summer, including a three day weekend.
