Lawmakers Tour New Bedford’s Waterfront

A group of freshman lawmakers from other parts of the state now know a little more about New Bedford’s fishing industry. The group toured the city’s waterfront on Friday, led by Rep. Chris Markey of Dartmouth. During a tour of Northern Wind Seafood on Hassey St., lawmakers seemed confused by the maze of regulations that cover commercial fishing. Rep. Rep. Steve Howitt a Republican from Seekonk, believes in deregulation in some instances, and commercial fishing might be one of those areas.

The lawmakers also took a boat tour of New Bedford Harbor, met with boatowner Carlos Rafael of Carlos Seafood, and attended a reception with Mayor Jon Mitchell and Economic Development Director Matt Morrissey.
