NEW BEDFORD- A Lakeville man was arrested by the New Bedford Police Department on Tuesday night for allegedly operating a boat under the influence of alcohol.

Sixty-one year old Christoper Karo was attempting to dock his inflatable boat at the Pease Park Ramp in New Bedford Harbor at approximately 7:15 PM when a witness saw him showing signs of intoxication. Police arrived at Pease Park and subsequently arrested Karo at 9:05 PM.

The arrest comes after New Bedford Police participated in a campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of boating under the influence, Operation Dry Water, which was held over the Independence Day weekend.

Alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents, according to the New Bedford Police Department press release.
