Rep. Robert Koczera of New Bedford has filed legislation to reinstate the Clean Environment Fund as part of state government.

The fund was done away with in 2003 because of budget constraints. Koczera says the fund would use a portion of unclaimed bottle deposits for grants to cities and towns needing help with solid waste management or recycling measures.

"I'm hopeful that this measure of reinstating the Clean Environment Fund will be accepted," said Koczera. The New Bedford Democrat added, "it really helps the Commonwealth in terms of recycling and solid waste management."

Koczera testified in favor of the bill Tuesday before the Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture during a hearing at the Westport Grange.

Koczera's bill is also supported by the Mass. Municipal Association.
