KG Urban Seeks “Level Playing Field” In Casino Application Process

 A company hoping to build a casino in New Bedford says it's seeking a level playing field as it prepares to apply for a license from the state gambling commission.

    In a brief filed in federal court Monday, KG Urban Enterprises says the commission should be ordered to select a casino operator in southeastern Massachusetts the same way as everywhere else.

    The casino law initially gave exclusivity in the southeast to the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe. The commission eventually voted to accept applications from commercial developers, but said it would monitor tribal efforts and could decide not to award a commercial license, if the tribe showed progress.

    KG argues that's continued preferential treatment for the tribe, since it hasn't met minimum requirements, such as acquiring land.

    The tribe has said its project is further along than other would-be developers. (Associated Press)
