The Kansas City Royals have defeated the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 to win the American League pennant and advance to the World Series. The Royals completed a four-game sweep of the O's in the American League Championship Series.

Kansas City scored two runs in the first inning to take the lead and held on from there. Ryan Flaherty homered in the third for Baltimore's lone run.

The Royals will play either the San Francisco Giants or St. Louis Cardinals in the Fall Classic beginning next week. It's the first trip to the World Series for the Royals since winning their lone championship in 1985.
