A federal jury has found in a civil lawsuit that a Massachusetts State Police Trooper used excessive force and engaged in malicious prosecution against a Massachusetts woman even though he had probable cause to arrest her for traffic violations.

The Boston Globe reports 52-year-old Beth Shea, of Milton, was awarded $300,000 in damages on Tuesday.

Shea claimed she was terrified of Trooper Bradford Porter when he accused her in 2007 of driving recklessly, speeding, resisting arrest, and using her vehicle as a deadly weapon. Records show Porter, who wasn't in uniform, smashed a window of Shea's SUV, unlocked her door, and pulled her into the street while she struggled.

Her attorney says Shea is grateful for the jury's decision.

The trooper's attorney says the arrest was lawful and that Porter may appeal. (Associated Press)
