I can hear my mother's reprimand right now, "You're too close to the TV screen! It'll make your eyes go square!"

That was then, but this is 2013 and so many of us are spending a lot of time looking at computer screens, mobile phone screens and TV, too! So is all this bad for our eyes? Is there any truth to my mother's rant?

According to experts with the College of Optometrists, looking at screens for more than 3 hours a day can cause a few problems. Dry eye, itchy eye, burning sensation, blurred vision and difficulty focusing are among the most common complaints.

There is a procedure for dry eye, caused by a lack of tears due to a blockage of the oil secreting glands. It costs about $800 an eye and only takes 20 minutes to correct.
