The Inter-Church Council of Greater New Bedford will be holding an Inter-Faith 9/11 Worship Service on Sunday.

The council's Executive Minister, Rev. David Lima, told WBSM News that the service will be an opportunity for people from various groups to come together in a service focused on healing and breaking down divisions that exist between various communities.

"We're hoping that we can create a dialogue that people would say 'we've got to do more of this,'" said Lima "and I know that that's been attempted and we want to support things that other people are doing, but this was going to be our shot at 'let's see what we can do about brining the different groups together."

While the service will be held in rememberance of the attacks that took place on Sept. 11, 2001 Lima says they will also focus on more recent tragedies as well.

"What happened in Orlando, what has happened with police, what is the actual animosity that seems to be coming out about immigrants in these debates and publications and all," said Lima "we wanted to address all that because New Bedford is a microcosm of all that and more."

Lima says they will also be encouraging all those in attendance to take that message with them once the service ends.

"We're going to be encouraging everybody to talk to somebody that they didn't come with, that they don't look like, that they don't sound like, that they don;t act like, and get to know somebody else," said Lima "because we're all humans and we all have value and, in order for us to get to that place of understanding, we all have to communicate with one another."

The service will begin at 4 p.m. at the North Baptist Church at 750 County St. in New Bedford.

The New Bedford Fire Department will also conduct a memorial excercise with a moment of silence beginning at 10 a.m.

In addition St. Peter's Episcopal Church located at 351 Elm St. in Dartmouth will also host a dedication for a new Community Peace Garden and Pole with a service that will begin at 10:30 a.m.
