How many times have you heard someone warn against feeding our pets "human food?" Truth be told, I have fed our dogs and cats homemade mixtures for years! Study up on what meats, poultry, vegetables and nutrients you should use, and what foods to totally avoid!

For many of you who know about the preservatives and fillers that are in canned and dry dog food, making your pooch a nice chicken dinner would make him very, very happy! And it's healthy for them, too! Here are some foods you can consider or stay away from! If you have a homemade dog food recipe, please share it!

Good For Dogs/Cats:

  • Raw unsalted peanut butter
  • Cooked chicken
  • Cheese
  • Baby carrots
  • Pumpkin eggs
  • Green beans
  • Apple slices
  • Oatmeal

Bad For Dogs/Cats:

  • Fruit or vegetable seeds (they contain cyanide)
  • Avocado
  • Onion/garlic powder
  • Grapes or raisins
  • Milk and dairy products
  • Coffee
  • Chocolate
  • Fat trimmings.

A good dog food recipe contains: about 25% of protein, no more than 10% of fiber, and varying amounts of carbohydrates.

A good cat food recipe contains: 50-60% of protein, 30-50% of fat, and 5-10% of carbohydrates.
