Every little girl's favorite kitty is NOT a cat! The character's creator Sanrio has released a statement claiming that Hello Kitty, is in fact "a bright little girl with a heart of gold.” She has a twin sister named Mimmy and they are the best of friends. She loves the piano and apple pie. She's also been in the third grade since 1976.

I was never a huge fan of Hello Kitty, but I know women that were (and probably still are, but won't admit it). I am trying very hard to conceptualize their reasoning for this character to not be labeled as a cat. I mean, it has whiskers, a button nose, and pointy ears. CNN quoted Sanrio with their explanation of why she's not a feline. "Hello Kitty is not a cat. She's a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She's never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it's called Charmmy Kitty." (Hilary Whiteman) By Sanrio's standards, Mickey Mouse and all his friends are humans, and Pluto is the only true dog.

I think we are taking things a bit too far Sanrio. Time to simmer down with this whole "this is not a pipe" fiasco. Hello Kitty is a cat, and no one can tell me otherwise.
