A homeless man has been arrested after allegedly breaking into a car in the South End early Thursday morning.

New Bedford Police patrolling the 100 block of Windsor Street around 1:30 Thursday morning noticed a man checking car doors to see if they were unlocked. The man was eventually able to gain access into an unlocked Nissan Altima, but was arrested before he was able to steal any valuables.

Police have charged 34-year-old Brent Doucette, with a last known address in Wareham, with breaking and entering and intent to commit a misdemeanor. Doucette is known to police.

Police warn residents to lock their cars overnight to avoid being a victim of theft.
