Volunteers have finished hand-counting the number of homeless people in New Bedford.

Joseph Maia, coordinator with the New Bedford Office of Housing and Community Development says it will take some time to process all of the completed surveys, but he doesn't expect the total to be far off from last year's count of 338.

Maia says the federally mandated survey helps to determine how much aid cities and towns receive based on their homeless population.

He adds this is the first year volunteers will count 14-24 year-olds in their own category, unaccompanied youth.
