The 2014 count of homeless people in New Bedford is underway. A brief press conference was held on the steps of City Hall Wednesday afternoon before the count's 2pm start time.

Rev. David Lima, chairman of the Homeless Service Providers Network, said over forty volunteers will conduct the count over the next 24 hours around the city...

The non-profit Point-In-Tme committee will count until 2pm Thursday. They will supply care packages to homeless people they find outside over night.

There are over twenty-thousand homeless people living in Massachusetts and the federal government requires a homeless count by communities each year to determine funding needs.
