Heavy rainfall caused flooding in Fall River while the National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings for parts of southeast Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Ann O'Neil-Souza, the mayor's chief of staff in Fall River, says flooding occurred on a significant scale Wednesday in the city. She says some people had to be rescued from motor vehicles and small fires broke out across Fall River.

National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Simpson says between two and three inches of rain fell in an hour's time in the area of Fall River.

The National Weather Service in Taunton issued flash flood warnings just after noon that covered parts of Barnstable, Bristol and Plymouth counties. The warnings said flash flooding of small streams and urban areas was occurring or was imminent.
