Monday, March 25 is Greek Independence Day. Hellenes from around the world salute the freedom fighters of Greece who began their revolt against the Ottoman Empire on this day in 1821.

As a person very proud of my Greek heritage, I take pride in applauding the accomplishments of our local Greek community and the contributions made, past and present. This is actually a dual holiday of Independence and the Feast of the Annunciation, when the Angel Gabriel told Mary she was having a baby, which was Jesus Christ!

So allow me to combine the secular and religious by honoring the Greek people for helping build our community and praying for a financial independence for Greece, the cradle of Western Civilization.
