UPDATE (1PM) - State and local police are searching for a man believed to be armed with a handgun in the far North End of New Bedford.

Police tell WBSM News the Dairy Market at 4443 Acushnet Avenue was robbed at gunpoint around 10am Monday morning with the suspect driving away with an undetermined amount of cash and cigarettes. He is described as a light-skinned male, about 5'6", wearing a mask and a white hoody with an emblem or logo on the shoulder.

The suspect's vehicle was located at the Lord Phillips Condominium complex, and has been towed to Police Station #3.

A perimeter has been established in the general area, with K-9 units from New Bedford and surrounding towns combing the area. The Massachusetts State Police helicopter is also aiding in the search for the suspect.

No injuries have been reported.

Original Story (12:40PM) - WBSM News has learned that an active search for a possibly armed suspect is taking place in the far north end of New Bedford.

New Bedford Police tell WBSM News the Dairy Market at 4443 Acushnet Avenue was robbed at gunpoint earlier today, with the suspect driving away in a black car. Police say that vehicle was later located at the Lord Phillips Condominiums complex, but the suspect was nowhere to be found.

Local and State Police are now conducting a sweeping search of the area near Route 140 between exits 7 and 8.
