Longtime college basketball head coach Jerry Tarkanian is dead at the age of 84.

The Hall of Fame coach's son broke the news on Twitter that his father has passed away.

Tarkanian was hospitalized in Las Vegas on Monday due to breathing trouble and an infection.  He had also dealt with several health issues in recent years, including pneumonia in November and a second heart attack last April.

While he made several stops during his coaching career, Tarkanian is best remembered for his time at UNLV.

He retired in 2002 with 729 college wins, a national title and having taken three schools to the NCAA Tournament.

He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.  (Metro Networks Inc)
