Gun, Crack Found in New Bedford Man’s Car

A 24-year-old city man is facing gun and drug charges in New Bedford District Court.

Members of the Police Department's Gang Unit Wednesday night observed a vehicle being driven in reverse at Acushnet Avenue and Rockland Street and fishtailing in the snow.

Officers stopped the vehicle and later arrested a front-seat passenger, 24-year-old Jose Mendez-Garcia after finding a 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun on his person, loaded with seven rounds of ammunition. A small amount of crack cocaine was also found in the side door handle on the passenger side of the vehicle.

The suspect was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.
