Ground has been broken and construction is underway in Seekonk on the planned Veteran's Memorial Park.

The $150,000 memorial will have the names of fallen soldiers etched in granite.

Robert DeFontes, Vice Chairman of the Memorial Building Committee, told ABC6 that this is a way the town can honor Seekonk residents who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

"We have 24 causalities in this town alone so we can have the freedom we so cherish today," says DeFontes.

Joe Velardo, a construction worker who's donating his skills toward the building of the memorial, says that once it is completed it will look very similar to a memorial in the nation's capitol.

"You will see a miniature memorial just like you see in Washington DC," says DeFontes.

The total cost of the project is $150 thousand with $50 thousand having been approved by taxpayers and the remainder of the funds coming from donations.

Organizers hope to have the project completed by Memorial Day of next year.
