The New Bedford Fire and Police Departments were called to West Beach Wednesday afternoon after a report of a grenade being found on the beach.

Fire Chief Michael Gomes tells WBSM News the device found was indeed a grenade.

He said, "It had been inerted at some time in the past and did not pose a hazard."

Gomes said reports indicated that the bomb squad did not need to be called in to check out the device.
