The Wareham Police Department shared a touching story about grandparents that reached out to say thank you for helping to rescue their missing granddaughter:

We don’t expect thanks for doing what is often a thankless job. But it sure is a nice morale boost when we do receive thanks. In this case, we share the thanks with all who did their part, in one way or another, to make sure that a child made it back to her family.

From the grandparents of Lily:

“Our 12-year-old granddaughter, Lily went missing last Wednesday morning from a treatment center in Buzzards Bay. She literally walked out the front door, into the woods and was missing for nearly 24 hours. The Wareham Police department immediately launched a massive search deploying technology, social media, helicopters, search dogs and search teams. They answered every single question our family had with patience and kindness.

Luckily she was found. Scratched up, mosquito bit and very cold. Two local Wareham residents – truly angels, opened their door to Lily, took her in, wrapped her in blankets and kept her safe until the police arrived.

I write this letter to thank you. Thank you Wareham police and the tireless, dedicated team who executed an impressive search and rescue mission. Thank you to those wonderful people who took Lily in. Thank you to all the citizens in the area who after being alerted were aware and on the lookout for Lily. Thank you to all the friends and acquaintances who helped spread the word.

Needless to say, this was a nightmare for our family. Especially since most of us were nearly 2,000 miles away. But, we can’t begin to tell you how comforting it was to see an entire town and area rally and pull together to help find this beautiful child. Lily is safely back home with us in Texas and we had a wonderful homecoming with her Sunday night.

While we remain thousands of miles away, we will always hold the citizens of Wareham in our hearts. In this time that our law enforcement officers are often embattled with criticism, it is important for us to recognize the good that they do and don’t get credit for. People are generally kind and good – Wareham is a shining example of this.”

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,

Julie & Jerry Williams
