Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has appointed his former Chief-of-Staff as interim U.S. Senator for the seat being vacated by Secretary of State-Designate John Kerry.

The Governor says William "Mo" Cowan is well-respected and will bring his wisdom and good judgement to the job. Cowen thanked the Governor and said he'd work for bay state residents.

In making the announcement, Patrick praised Senator Kerry and thanked him for his service to the state. New Bedford State Senator Mark Montigny knows Cowan well and thinks the Governor made a good choice.

Kerry's resignation becomes effective on Friday.
