Ward Six City Councilor Joe Lopes and Chief Financial Officer Ari Sky are working on a plan to take care of the many city owned buildings. The plan is a good one that makes sense fiscally.

Lopes and Sky have crafted a proposal to set aside money annually from the general fund to make badly needed repairs to city owned buildings and to provide for preventative maintenance in order to protect the investment made by taxpayers. Deferred maintenance over the years has left many city buildings in a  sorry state and in some case dangerous. The plan could eventually eliminate the need to bond for repairs.

The proposal has widespread support in Council Chambers and with the Administration.   The City Council on Thursday night should quickly vote to pass the measure on to The Finance Committee where the details can be worked out and a final version referred back to The Council as quickly as possible for enactment.

When government is pro-active the taxpayer wins and this plan is a winner.
