Gomes Wants CORI Check For All “New Hires”

Councilor At Large Brian Gomes says he’ll file a proposed ordinance to have every new employee hired by the City of New Bedford to undergo a criminal background or CORI check.

Gomes says he decided to file the ordinance after an incident several weeks ago, where a city employee was arrested for armed robbery, and had a previous criminal record. But Gomes added, he anticipates the ordinance would have some lee-way in the hiring process.

Gomes says he’ll ask the City Council Attorney to research and draw up the proposed ordinance, before any Council action is taken
