Following Wednesday's fatal stabbing of a 15-year-old boy in New Bedford there has been a great deal of discussion regarding how to address youth violence in the city.

City Councillor Brian Gomes met with Police Chief Joseph C. Cordeiro and Gomes told WBSM's Barry Richard that the department is taking action to address violence in the city.

"He has many plans that are in the structure right now, it's just a matter of bringing all parties together," said Gomes "you will see a difference on the streets, you will see some different things happening that will be in the affirmative for the City of New Bedford. But it takes a plan of action and that plan of action is being worked on right now."

There is also a belief that the incident may have been the result of a long running feud between two rival gangs.

While saying he couldn't speak specifically on the matter Gomes says that it is being investigated but that the fighting needs to stop.

"All that is being discussed and into consideration and it has been going on," said Gomes "I don't know quite what the big deal as far as being part of this and the West End against the South End, or whatever, but it's a bunch of nonsense."

Gomes also called on families to become more involved in their children's lives so they can intervene before tragedies like this happen.
