A local principal has been named one of the best in that nation.

Lena Pires, the Principal of Global Learning Charter Public School in New Bedford, has been named as one of the top ten finalists for the Escalante–Gradillas $20,000 Prize for Best in Education.

Pires's profile on thebestschools.org highlighted some of the accomplishments during her tenure as principal including the school earning a spot as one of the top high schools in the 2014-2015 US News and World Report, a 1.9% dropout rate, and the introduction of a free and innovative Martial Arts Program.

Pires has been at the school for 12 years working four years as a teacher before spending eight years in administration.

The website says that the ten recipients on the list has proven their ability to overcome odds, rally the team, and cultivate educational success where "weaker wills could not."

A winner hasn't yet been announced.
