Mayoral challenger Maria Giesta wants to see seven debates between herself and Mayor Jon Mitchell in the weeks leading up to the final election.

Giesta is proposing one debate in each ward, plus a city-wide debate.

She tells WBSM News, the process should be about reaching as many potential voters as possible. "Its about giving out the information that is needed for the citizens of New Bedford to make a decision of who they believe is the right person to run this city. The more debates, the better," she said.

As of now Giesta says she only knows of two debates so far, both during the final week of the campaign.

In a statement released by Mayor Mitchell's campaign, the Mayor said he welcomed the chance to present his administration's accomplishments.

The statement added a number of community groups are considering hosting forums, and he will work to accomodate those groups.
