Thomas Muller netted a hat trick as Germany opened Group G play by shredding a 10-man Portugal team in a 4-0 rout from Salvador.

Portugal defender Pepe was shown a straight red card following an altercation with Muller.  The Germans got off  the mark after just 11 minutes when Muller converted a penalty  kick.  The advantage was doubled in the 32nd minute with a header goal from defender Mats Hummels.  Muller then scored twice more.

The result puts Germany in firm command of Group G, widely considered the toughest at this Cup by far.  Pepe's card also means he will now miss what could be a critical match against the United States on Sunday.  (Metro Networks Inc)
