Generator Fire Damages Fairhaven Fishing Boat

Fairhaven Firefighters doused a smokey, stubborn fishing boat fire Monday afternoon. The fire broke out just after 1pm on Union Wharf. The first responders spotted heavy, black smoke coming from the 84-foot fishing vessel “Legacy” tied up at the pier. Public Information Officer Wayne Oliveira tells WBSM News, the fire was in the engine room.

Oliveira says the crew was working on the vessel but evacuated quickly and no one was hurt. It took about 45 minutes to extinguish the fire. Oliveira said the fire was confined to the engine room and may have been caused by a faulty generator. The vessel is owned by David Wilhelmsen of Mattapoisett. No damage estimate was available.
