A survey in Britain shows that gardening makes people happier.

The survey comes from the magazine Gardeners' World and they asked 1,500- adults in the UK. The research found:

  • 80 % of gardeners feel satisfied with their lives compared to 67% of non-gardeners.
  • Those with outdoor hobbies in general were the happiest, with 78% of walkers say they were satisfied with their lives and 75% of those who fish saying the same.

Jules Pretty, a professor of environment and society at the University of Essex says, "Scientific research...now clearly shows that engagement with green places is good for personal health. We also know that short-term mental health improvements are protective of long-term benefits."
