The state Gaming Commission is hiring its first expert on problem gambling.

Mark Vander Linden of the Iowa Department of Public Health has been hired to head the panel's efforts to combat compulsive gambling as the state moves to open casinos in several different locations.

Vander Linden sits on the board of the National Center for Responsible Gaming and is also board president of the Association of Problem Gambling Services Administrators.
