A major anti-terror raid that lasted throughout the night on the outskirts of Paris is over.

French officials say security operations will continue in the area, but the scene is much more calm than it had been.

Gunfire and explosions rang out at different times as heavily-armed soldiers, police and SWAT teams carried out the operation.

Their target was the mastermind of last week's Paris terror attacks, but it's unclear if he was in the apartment building the raid focused on.

The Paris prosecutor says two people were killed, including a female suicide bomber who blew herself up.

The second was shot by a sniper. Several arrests were made and a number of police officers were injured. President Obama has been briefed on the situation.
