Residents of Freetown are being asked to review preliminary flood insurance rate maps that were recently released by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The four maps cover sections of East Freetown and, if they are finalized, officials say they will become the basis for the town's floodplain management plans.

Officials say those plans must be implemented in order for the town to participate in the National Flood Insurance Program.

Any homeowner who wishes to make an appeal is asked to send a letter to Lauren Moreau, Planning Technician, 3 N Main St, Assonet, Mass. 02702. She can also be reached by phone at (508) 644-2270 X1402, or e-mail lmoreau@freetownma.gov. The appeal will then be forwarded to FEMA.

All appeals must be submitted before before the end of a 90-day review period which began August 4.

The maps can be found on the town's website
