The newest monument in New Bedford was dedicated Sunday, memorializing the former Sacred Heart Church.

Former parishioners of the church, which was demolished in 2001, gathered at the former site of the church at Robeson and Summer Streets for a dedication ceremony.

Leon Halle, former parishioner, says the memorial incorporates the Sacred Heart School bell, and the original cornerstone of the church.

The base of the monument was constructed by city mason workers. A steel frame enclosure for the bell was fabricated by students at Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech.
