After being released by the New England Patriots at the start of the offseason, veteran right tackle Sebastian Vollmer has announced his retirement from professional football.

Vollmer made the announcement, along with one that he has already shed 75 pounds from his playing weight of 320 pounds, on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Tuesday.

The Houston product was selected by the Pats in the second round of the 2009 draft and had played in 98 total games for New England over his 8-year career. He did miss the entirety of the 2016 season, however, with a hip injury.

With Marcus Cannon stepping up and playing well throughout the season at the right tackle spot in 2016, Vollmer and his aging, injured body were fazed out of New England's plans.

Vollmer is a 2-time Super Bowl champion, as he also played an integral role on the 2014 Super Bowl champion team.
