This year's National Letter Carrier's Food Drive is being labeled a success, but local organizers admit they're looking at some new ideas to create more awareness and excitement next year, the event's 25th anniversary.

This year's Food Drive on May 14th collected more than 31,000 pounds of food, about the same as last year.

Organizer Richard Drolet tells WBSM News, all of the food has been distributed to seven area food pantries.

"They were the beneficiaries of 31,600 pounds of food that they didn't have the day before. The way we look at it, those food pantries didn't have that food yesterday but they have it today, they're ahead of the game," said Drolet.

During the early years of the event, the food collection totaled almost 50,000 pounds, but has leveled off in recent years.  Drolet says he and others are already planning several new "gimmicks" to create more awareness about the food drive.

They're also planning more extensive use of social media to promote the event.
