New Bedford Police are searching for up to five people believed to be involved in an assault over the weekend.

A 25-year-old New Bedford man told police he was protecting his father from the five people Sunday night as they tried to rob him. The victim's father, a 41-year-old New Bedford man, was leaving Jalice Cafe on Acushnet Avenue just before 9pm Sunday night when he was approached by four men and a woman asking him for money. When he refused to give them cash, the group reportedly followed the man home. That's when the man's son came out of the house to protect his father.

The victim told police one of the suspects broke a beer bottle over his arm, with the assailant using the broken pieces to cut the son's arm. All of the suspects fled.

The victim described two of the men as Cape Verdean and the other two as Puerto Rican. The victim was treated at St. Luke's hospital.

The incident is under investigation.
